Low-cost spay and neuter programs are vital for our community as they help families keep more of their money for other costs, but they also help to control the pet population, reducing the number of animals in shelters. By making these services affordable, we encourage responsible pet ownership and prevent unwanted litters. Additionally, spaying and neutering can to healthier pets and a decrease in certain health issues. Overall, investing in programs strengthens our community by promoting animal welfare and enhancing public health.
Our Mission
Haywood Spay/Neuter envisions a future where proper health care is available to every pet in Haywood County, regardless of owner income status. Spay and Neuter services are essential to the health of each dog or cat and greatly diminish the cycle of homeless and unwanted animals. Our wellness programs provide education, referral resources, and essential services to empower pet owners to give their companions the healthy, happy lives they deserve.
Haywood Spay/Neuter Today
As a component of Sarge's Animal Rescue, our entire operation is run by one part-time employee and a group of very dedicated volunteers. We spay/neuter approximately 850 pets per year. We are the "front of house" for the ASPCA Humane Alliance spay/neuter animal hospital. We handle sign-ups, payments, and the crating of pets to be fixed. The hospital picks up the pets, performs the operations, and returns the pets to us the next day. We have the pleasure of reuniting the pets with their owners. We also offer other services which are described on the Our Services webpage.
Haywood Spay/Neuter History
We date back to 1955 when a small group of local residents founded the Haywood County Humane Association “to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote humane educational programs on a county-wide basis.” We reorganized in 1973 and again in 1986, forming the Haywood Animal Welfare Association as a non-profit, tax-exempt community service organization. We’ve made great strides since the days of non-existent county animal control laws and a back-alley county animal shelter. For instance, we were the driving force in the construction of the Haywood County Animal Shelter in 1990, and we worked on passing the legislation for the new Adoption Center and intake shelter that opened in April 2018.
We have sponsored over 30,000 spay/neuters since 2002.

Haywood Spay Neuter is a 501C3 nonprofit that provides our community with low-cost spay/neuter services and animal wellness programs. We also provide flea and tick medicines at a low cost for those that need them. Spaying/neutering is the best way to combat the largest killer of cats and dogs- the euthanasia of unwanted, homeless animals.
