What is fostering?
What is required of fosters?
Fostering is a volunteer opportunity that helps shelter animals relax and learn skills to assist them in finding their adoptive homes. nimals need a calm space to heal from surgeries or medical conditions. Mothers also need a safe space to raise their babies until they are old enough to be weaned, and young animals may need a safe environment to stay in while they build their immune systems after getting their first vaccines.
We ask for fosters to transport foster animals to and from Sarge’s for adoption appointments, vet appointments, events, etc. It is also crucial to communicate with the foster coordinator to share photos, updates, concerns, and anything in between. And of course… your time and attention!
What does Sarge's provide?
Why is fostering needed?
There are a variety of reasons an animal may need to spend time in foster. Sometimes an animal is overwhelmed or scared and/or needs a break from the shelter to relax and de-stress. Some Sarge’s animals have never lived in a home and need to practice basics like potty training and crate training, while other animals need a calm space to heal from surgeries or medical conditions. Mothers also need a safe space to raise their babies until they are old enough to be weaned, and young animals may need a safe environment to stay while they build their immune systems after getting their first vaccines.
Food, beds, toys, treats, meds... anything you need for your particular foster! You will also receive support from staff including behavioral, medical, emergencies, regular check in’s and plans for each animal, etc.
What types of fostering is needed?
Can a person have pets of their own,
and still be a foster?
Yes! We offer dog meets here on site so we can get to know your dogs and match you with the best fit for your lifestyle. We counsel on how best to introduce foster animals to cats and what would be best in each individual foster situation.

What if something comes up or
they aren't a good match for my household?
Can fosters "advertise" their own animals?
Yes of course! You are the best advocate for your foster animal. If you meet someone interested in adopting or learning more about your Sarge’s animal, share what you know about them and direct them to apply at sarges.org!
That’s okay! Not every animal will be the right fit; animals in foster can come back to Sarge’s at any time. You have access to the foster coordinator on call for emergencies to ensure you are never stuck with the responsibility of finding housing for your foster animal.
What if my animal needs veterinary care?
How long will I have my foster animal?
Sarge’s covers all vet care either at the adoption center, or at a partner vet in the area. Fosters may be asked to transport their foster animal to an appointment, but there will never be an out of pocket cost.
You can foster for 1 night, a weekend, a week, or more! The time frame is completely dependent on the animal’s needs and the foster's preferences. Fosters always have the option to shorten or lengthen their foster animal’s stay after conversation with the foster coordinator/Sarge’s team.
