Corey Johnson
Board Member

Corey W. Johnson is thrilled to serve on the Board of Directors at Sarge’s Animal Rescue
Foundation, the organization that helped bring his youngest dog, Harvey, home. A part-time
Waynesville local and full-time dog softie, Corey has long admired Sarge’s role in Haywood
County as a lifeline for animals in need and the people who love them.
When Corey isn’t at the shelter sneaking in extra cuddles or asking too many questions about
each dog’s backstory, they work as a Distinguished Professor at NC State University. Their
professional life centers on community, care, and justice—how people create belonging, safety,
and joy together. That perspective shapes how Corey approaches board service at Sarge’s: always
asking how policies, programs, and partnerships can give every animal the best possible chance
at a safe, loving home.
Corey and their partner share their home with two beloved dogs, the other being Sedgwick who
teaches Harvey the ropes and keeps him in line. Living with two energetic pups has only
deepened Corey’s commitment to supporting adoptions, fostering, and the humans who make
room in their lives for animals. Whether walking dogs on the greenway, cheering on Sarge’s
volunteers at the many events, or helping Sarges think through the organization’s next chapter,
Corey is honored to give back to the rescue that has already given their family so much.
